Leadership Development

Leadership Development

We’ve all seen it – the wrong person in the wrong role for the wrong reasons. Quality leadership is about much more than “function.” It involves an ability to guide people, be discerning, make critical decisions quickly and effectively, and an ability to look into the future while at the same time keep a close watch on immediate goals of the organizations. All of this adds up to what I like to call “leadership DNA.”

Today’s organizational climate is fraught with constant change, big challenges, mergers and acquisitions, consolidation, and fierce competition. If you are an executive or leader in a company this is not news to you. When considering how your organization survive, thrive, and remain agile and competitive in an atmosphere of constant change and competition, developing and retaining high quality leaders should be at the top of your list of strategies. Leadership development is a smart investment in human capital – arguable your most valuable asset.

My work with organizations is fueled by a desire to help leaders and executives understand themselves. It’s only when an individual knows who they are and what they stand for that leadership becomes authentic to them. My opinion is that authentic leaders are the most effective leaders. I hold the view that once an individual becomes “serene in their own skin,” their capacity to lead improves dramatically as they are accepted for who they are and seen as authentic, sincere, and consistent in how they relate with others. Leaders who possess a keen sense of authenticity are more apt to have a realistic view of their own strengths and use those strengths for the greater good. They also recognize their own limitations and make conscious choices about which ones to work on and which ones should simply be noted and managed.

Philosophy and Approach

Recognizing the importance of authentic leadership in organizations today, my role as coach is to help leaders find their true north. This work is highly customized because every individual is unique and has a career and personal “life story” that influences everything they do. Our life stories have formulated in us certain values and ways of being.  William James wrote: “I have often thought that the best way to define a man’s character is to seek out the particular mental or moral attitude in which . . . he felt himself most deeply and intensively active and alive. At such moments, there is a voice inside which speaks and says, “This is the real me.” While organizations benefit immensely from developing effective leaders, ultimately is each individual’s responsibility to grown themselves in a way – in an authentic way – that will serve their organization, their own career growth, and their character.

A new leader has to be able to change an organization that is dreamless, soulless and visionless . . .. someone's got to make a wake up call.
